Bladenboro, NC - Bladenboro Middle School’s baseball team kicked off its season at home on Wednesday, showing grit and hustle before falling just short in an 8-6 loss.
With the stands filled and excitement in the air, the Bulldogs fought to the final out in their season opener.
Leading the offensive charge for Bladenboro were Gaston Russ and Gauge King, both crossing the plate twice to help keep their team within striking distance. Their aggressive baserunning and heads-up play were key in generating early momentum.
Sawyer King also delivered a strong performance at the plate, reaching base three times and scoring a run of his own. His consistency in getting on base gave the Bulldogs multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Tyler Thurman added to the effort with a run scored, while Brooks Carroll made his presence known by reaching base three times, proving to be a tough out for the opposing pitchers.
In the second inning, Jeremiah Bryan came in as a pinch runner, showing off his speed on the base paths. The Bulldogs also saw late-game contributions in the sixth inning, with Ryland Bordeaux stepping in to bat for Dalton Ammons, and Oxiel Campos taking an at-bat in place of Joseph Burney.
Though the result wasn't in their favor, Bladenboro showed plenty of promise in their season debut.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Monday as they hit the road for a matchup at Central.
